What are Internet Cookies?

Internet Cookies
Internet Cookies

Internet Cookies are used by every website. Internet Cookies contain a bit of information about the users in the text files that act as a memory in the websites.

As soon as we use a server, a small amount of data about users is starting stored in the cookies. The website uses it to identify the user and device as the user again comes to the same website.

Consider you visit an education-related website and search for a python tutorial. Now, again whenever you come to the same website, the cookies of the website instantly identify you and your device and your work (your search) that you have done before. Everyone who has used the internet has interacted with cookies in some way. Whenever a new user comes to a website, he/she have to accept or reject the cookies.

As soon as you hit the accept, the website tries to identify your behaviors in that particular domain and it starts collecting information about you like what are you doing, which pages are you visiting, how much time you are interacting with the website and stored the data in the cookies. Or when you Sign Up, the website creates cookies to store your IDs for your future reference.

Advantages of Internet Cookies

Cookies make it convenient for the users to enter a website and experience a smooth, better, and good quality of browsing. It also helps the users, as the cookies know every user ID, password, or credential and hence users don’t have to remember anything. Cookies also block irrelevant ads and give you a better experience with the website.

Disadvantages of Internet Cookies

Cookies are not harmful to us but they can be if it is misused by attackers. If your system ever gets compromised, attackers/hackers can access your device and can access your browsing history, sensitive data that is present in your device, an attacker can use your device for his irrelevant motives, and many more.

What happens when we reject Internet cookies?

If you don’t accept the cookies, then the website is enabled to track your behavior inside that domain. You might also experience worse browsing quality and maybe it can show you ads that are irrelevant for your convenience. A user will be in complete control of data but can have a worse experience with the site. You can also delete the existing cookies on the website.
